Now and then I have to troubleshoot domains that have fallen out of the root name servers for whatever reason, or have incorrect name servers still listed. The machine I’m on doesn’t have man page for dig, so I just found out about the dig +trace command today – it goes down the trail of name servers from the 13 root servers, showing you witch name servers answered the queries down to the currently authoritative name server and the Address records for the domain. Maybe it’s not so useful after all, but it’s cool to see where it goes. The whole .org TLD gets by with only 6 name servers? I guess two of them are using anycast, so it could really be many more.
